A Little Irony?
Peter-

Today someone from Germany ordered a AE-CD-Rom by mail [Aerial Eye Back Issues CD-ROM]. Guess what stamp he used..... I don't know if he did this by accident or that he knew that we like it a lot. Anyway, now we have an idea about what inspired Ralf Beutnagel.
A Little More Irony?
David-
This very unique bridge has a suspended ferry which travels across the canal on a cable suspension system very similar to the picavet. In fact Ralf Beutnagel named the Rendsberg variation of the picavet (H variation) after this famous bridge located in Rendsburg Germany.

Although this is not directly KAP oriented, I thought that it would be interesting to show this remarkable bridge to the KAP community. The Rendsberg Railway Viaduct spans the Kiel Canal between the North and the Baltic seas. The bridge was completed in 1913. And if the irony of Peter's letter is not enough, the bridge was under construction about the time Pierre L. Picavet of France first published the plans for the camera suspension system that now bears his name.

Visit the Deutsche Post site for some more information about the Rendsberg Railway Viaduct and the stamp shown above. Click under Quick Clicks-Postage Stamps then click New Releases in 2001. The Rendsburg link will be under April.

El Gran Puente Colgante - The Oldest Transporter Bridge

Peter-
The Puente Colgante seems to be the oldest bridge of this (Rendsburg) type. Build in 1890 in Bilbao (Spain). This was the age of giant steel constructions, like the famous Eiffel-tower in Paris.

I'm still not sure if these constructions where there to hold the "cradle" or to hold and to keep them level. Did Picavet used a known system or did he invented something new???
